If they were not the names of everything would be backwards and upside down.

Maps and layouts are usually from an aerial point of view. Most 3-Dimensional maps even have a skewed or angular perspective for the drawn out area in question. However, if you design a map from a grounded point of view in 3-D, then it would be like seeing the region in the same manner as though being there yourself. Just make sure the topography is correct.
