Annualcreditreport.com is a site set up and administered by all 3 major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and Transunion.) There is no charge for your free credit report, but it has some limitations.
You can only pull your report once a year for free. Experts state that you should pull only one bureau's report every 4 months, that way you will have 3 pulls a year to check for fraud.
The other limitation is that there will be no credit score, unless you pay extra. Congress passed the law allowing for a free credit report so that people could monitor for identity theft. But no rules about having to disclose credit scores were included.
If you want a credit report with scores, then try Freecreditreport.com. This site will provide a free copy of your report, with scores, but only if you sign up for their monitoring service. The good news is that the service has a trial period, so get your report, print it out and cancel the service and there should be no charge.
One more thing to consider....
The credit score shown on these reports may not be the actual credit report you find when you apply for credit. Every industry (auto loans, mortgages, credit cards, etc) have their own individual scoring model, gving more weight to different items. For example, when applying for a mortgage, the score will be affected much more by a mortgage late than an auto loan. However, when applying for an auto loan, the opposite can be true. The score you get online as a consumer is a generic number. So don't put all your weight into that score if you are looking to make a major purchase.
Good luck.
