A bandmate of mine borrowed my keyboard without telling me. I told him that he could use to record his music, but only when I leave to go on vacation (that's what the original agreement was). He proceeded to take it earlier than expected (I'm not leaving for another 3 weeks), and he did not inform me of this. I'm afraid that he may be lying and that he might take it to a party to play. In addition, he does not know HOW to play it, so I'm afraid that someone else might at the party mess around with it. How should I go about confronting him and laying down the law that this is unacceptable - I paid for it, you don't know how to play it, and MOST IMPORTANTLY: it's mine!

Well, considering that keyboards used in bands usually cost more than $100, I'm assuming, you might do well to do what tonalc1 said and have a written contract regarding possible damages. If this band member does not let you borrow his musical instruments on an on-going basis as well, then I would do something to safeguard my investment. Luckily I only have a keyboard that cost under $99 and no one is trying to borrow it, but I appreciate your concern. Hurry before you go on vacation and get it straightened out - nobody wants to see this case in small claims court if something were to happen to the keyboard. Good luck.

Prepare a simple contract that outlines how and when the keyboard can be used, stipulating that if there's any damage he will pay for it.

If he won't sign it, take it back and don't lend it to him.
