Canon EOS 350D is a a digita SLR and Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a prosumer camera.
the former is professional and the latter is prosumer.
pros and cons....profesional are costlier if you are not really into photography then dont buy it.
prosumers are a lilttle over just point and shoot cameras. some added features like exposure controls and all.
both actually cant be compared as both are into diff league.

if you ask me, well, i am a photographer myself for the past 15 years....deep into it, especially nature photography adn i want the professional one.

you think about your requirement and then decide which best suits you.

look for features adn pricing while diciding

Which is better? Depends on your needs. I have the 350D and S1 IS (not the s3 IS but close I guess).

The 350D has better response (less shutter lag) and depending on which lens you use, sharper pictures and better performance at high ISOs. In addition, it has a hotshoe for external flashes and since the lens does not need to extend on power up, it has much better start up/power on time (it's for all practical purposes instantaneous).

The s3 IS has the advantage of a big zoom range (12x) which would cost a bomb to replicate on the 350d. It also uses AA batteries (easily replacable) and more importantly, it has the advantage of being much lighter and smaller then the 350d.

So as to your quesiton of which is better, if you are looking for the one with better performance, price is not an issue (for lenses and flash etc) and you don't mind the bulk and weight, the 350D is the better camera for you.

On the other hand, if you need a versatile camera that is easy to carry around and easy to re-power and you don't want to spend too much, the S3 IS is the camera for you.

They're both great cameras in their own right so the one that fits your need best is probably the one you should get.

The 350D is a vastly more responsive machine. No contest. It will take 4 pictures before the Poweshot even pulls focus. It will will take pictures in low light situations where the Powershot is completely useless. It will give you more creative freedom - to blur the background, etc. It has a bigger viewfinder and better controls. It's a more professional camera in every respect.
The downside is that you will need 2 lenses to get the same zoom range as the Powershot (something like an 18-55mm and a 70-200mm), making the 350D more expensive and bulkier.
