The unexpected funny twist.

A large part of it might be a pleasing, almost adrenaline-like feeling in the unexpected or the surprise in the juxtaposition of normally unrelated things; another factor in more slapstick humor (and this is just my hypothesis) may be that, in terms of evolution, organisms that gained pleasure from seeing other organisms harmed or in a bad situation were more likely to survive than those that didn't find others' plights pleasurable, or "funny," because they would be less likely to help them and would thus increase their competitive edge.

Something that we don't expect, something that we hadn't realized before, something suprising. For example the joke: "Two men walked into a bar, the third one ducked" suprises you as you assume it means a Bar with alcohol. You were expecting one thing but got another. Most jokes are a variation on that theme.

I love linguistic jokes - they can be very surprising. And some people say that you know the language well if you understand jokes told in this language.

***a joke***
- What is an ig?
- An Eskimo's house without a loo.
:-)

i think it's all about how it's told to you. i have no knack for telling jokes at all, even though normally i'm a pretty funny person. i could tell you the funniest joke in the world and you still wouldn't laugh!!

i love billy connolly - he laughs at his own jokes before he finishes telling them and it's infectious.

it's something that doesn't make sense in the joke that make us laugh.. it also depends on how the person presents the joke.

Humor??? Or the need for it. Some people just don't have a sense of humor at all. HOW SAD!!!!! Laughter is suppose to be a cure for some illnesses, not to mention it spreads quickly in a crowd.....
