Or better yet, should we have bathrooms with built-in bookshelves?

A common thread here is that people enjoy much needed privacy in the bathroom. But come on, is bathroom the place to get inspired, creative, motivated??????
To actually sit in the bathroom for 30 minutes at the time?? Now that's something to think about.....now it makes me wonder what DO YOU GUYS EAT to get you to sit there for such a long time????

So along with built in shelves in the bathroom, perhaps add a built in automatic dispenser with stool softener?? and a CD player maybe?

Great question! No, really!
I've heard the bathroom referred to as "the library", "the study", "the office". All great references to a place where you have a reasonable expectation of privacy. But the reading material... ah that is almost sacred. My dad had a magazine basket. He always had a copy of the infamous "Jokes For The John" handy. And of course the latest copy of "Mechanics Illustrated". I learned a lot about mechanical things as a result of that exhaustive literary archive.
I must admit there is just such a basket in my home now, after all these years. It is filled with old copies of "US" and "People" and "Readers Digest" though. Not the masculine fare I grew up with. The reason? It's not my basket, it's hers!
So I guess it really is a cross-gender phenomenon. Don't get me wrong, I do have my favorite reading material. "Jazz Times" is good, "Gourmet" oddly enough. So "what's the perfect companion in times of complete relaxation" you ask? The latest Harley Davidson catalog of course! All the accessories, the chrome, the custom sheet metal kits, the new tachs, the leather bags. Oh, oh! How could life be better? It could not! Fifteen to thirty minutes of privacy and relative silence with a Harley catalog. OH! It's like closing your eyes and waking up in heaven. It's akin to my granddaughter's perception of Disney World. It's Nirvana. It's Shangri-la. It's the Seventh Heaven! It's like being on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise just as Jon-Luc gives the command to "fire all phasers" or "fire proton torpedos, full battle spread". Are you kidding me? It is the very thread of life itself.
To not read in the bathroom is, is, is, to not breath the air that sustains life. To withhold the blood that pulses through our veins. To order a tall three-shot latte and pour it out on the ground. It is impossible to even think about! It cannot, indeed, it must not be contemplated. Who are you and what have you done with the real gudrun077?

i am a chick and i prefer to read in the bathroom because it gives you something to do while relieving the bowels, and like a man we leave them in the bathroom so that if we are in a hurry to go, the book is one less thing to worry about and is there where you left it and ready to be read again. yes built in bathroom shelves is a great idea. and stop blaming men for this and admit you have tried it, because this is a sexist question and not really a reasonable one.

Good question, I wouldn't put a book shelve in there because when the shower is ran there tends to be a lot of moisture in the air and that can ruin books. I think they should take their reading material out with them.

No, I believe the bathroom is strictly for business. I would like to say that I believe there is a relationship between business and thinking. If you think deep and hard, it very often leads to a physical urge to do business. Am I right?

Because its the only place guaranteed not to be interrupted! In the old days when there were out houses there was no toilet paper so we used old phone books, or store catalogs for toilet paper. I think this is how all that got started.

Because sitting there with nothing else to do is boring, and if you take it with you when you leave it won't be there when you need it next time. (never take anything with a plot, the wait will drive you nutty.)

I have a magazine rack that hangs on the toilet tank. It's called multi-tasking.
