Where are you going to study law in LA?? UCLA or USC area?
UCLA /Westwood area has a lot of studests so its relatively safe, but pricey. $1300 may get you a studio, but you will have to worry about parking.

Stay away from USC. Thats south central, and there's mostly lower incomed people there, as well as gangs and homeless.

For $1300 a month you can find a relatively nice area in the South Bay like Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance.
The city of Lomita borders Torrance, and the cost is cheaper there. The neighborhood isn't as nice as Torrance, but its literally next door, so you can probably find a 1 bedroom apartment for under $1300.

The commute to UCLA is about 30 minutes and to USC about 15/20 minutes. I am assuming those are the 2 schools since you're studying law. Loyola is near those locations, and Pepperdine is about an additional 15-20 minutes from USC.

You can also venture to the Valley, such as Burbank, but I don't know much about that part. Just stay away from the Hollywood area. The places are cheaper but the parking situation is a pain!

It really depends on where you're studying. If you're at UCLA, there are a lot of good places on the West Side. If you're at USC, it's more tricky; the closest good area is El Segundo and Manhattan Beach. If you're at UCIrivine in Orange County, there are a pleanty of great neighborhoods. With $1300 per month, you should be able to find a good studio.

Find a place in the suburbs and use public transportation. Anywhere IN Los Angeles is pretty scary...

Believe it or not, look near Seal Beach near Magnolia Street. You'd be surprised and you'll be close to the beach and town you've seen in so many movies lately.
