Don't look at what's going on. Unfortunately tetanus shots are administered through the muscle so there is going to be some discomfort. Just remember to breathe slowly. Think about your favorite things and even sing a song out loud. Don't be worried about the doctors or nurses thinking you're crazy because I'm sure they have seen and heard it all.
Good luck and you'll do just fine.

I know how you feel about needles! Luckily, I haven't had to have a shot in a few years, but I do recall what steps I took to make it as painless as possible. If you try the following, you should be alright.

You will feel some anxiety as you are sitting there waiting for the doctor or nurse to prepare the shot, but during this time, you can practice calming down and thinking about something else. One of the most important things you can do is keep your arm relaxed. If you tense up, the needle has to go through the muscle which will only make it hurt that much more! Don't look at what the doctor or nurse is doing, but instead, look straight ahead and concentrate your attention on something enjoyable or another thing in the room. It will last for a second and then it'll be over!

Good luck!

Quit being a pussy. I get shots all the time. I'm in the Army. If you think that tetanus is bad, try getting an Anthrax or Small Pox shot. Just watch the Doc put it into your arm and then you'll know exactly what is happening. It's just a little needle prick. Be happy it's not some deadly disease they're putting into your arm.

KEEP YOUR ATTENTION FOCUSED ON SOMETHING ELSE , MUSIC , A SPECIAL PERSON IN UR LIFE , A MOVIE , ETC. . TETANUS SHOTS DO NOT HURT WHEN YOU GET THEM , I NEVER KNEW I HAD HAD THE SHOT & ASK THE NURSE WHEN R U GOING TO GIVE IT TO ME , SHE LAUGHED & SAID I ALREADY HAVE , WOW WAS I SURPRISED . TO B HONEST WITH U THE NEXT MORNING MY ARM WAS SO SORE I COULDN'T HARDLY MOVE IT , BUT BY ALL MEANS DO KEEP IT MOVING OR IT WILL B WORSE FOR LONGER , AFTER 2-3 DAYS I WAS FINE & IT WAS ALL OVER . HANG IN THERE YOU WILL BE FINE HON , IF U FEEL IT U WILL B ABOUT THE 10% OF PEOPLE WHOM DO , THAT IS A VERY LOW RATE SO COME ON CHIN UP .

the nurse will tell you when to expect a stick. Look away, breath normal, don`t flintch. tetanus shot goes into the muscle of upper arm. one bit of bad news, the shot site will be sore for 3-7 days. Most other shots aren`t as bad, but, the tetanus hurts more after. take Tylenol 1hr. before appt, use cool compresses, and exercise your arm....Carla C.N.A.

Can you call ahead and ask if there's any topical anesthetic that you can use just before the shot to numb the area, even Orajel or something like that?
