Some viruses (mostly older ones) can affect the boot sector of a computer and thus would affect linux. There are a few linux viruses/worms but compared to windows, it's probably like 9999 to 1.

Windows is more susceptible to viruses in part because only Microsoft can fix the holes and at times, they have been known to leave a security hole for MONTHS. In linux, when a hole is found, someone in the community usually fixes it right away and if you are vigilant in updating, you are better protected - this is one of the reasons why open source is better.

No, linux is has a greater risk towards viruses because the code is open. They are just uncommon or non existant beacuse:

1. Linux is not popular with everyday users therefore a hacker dosen't have a big incentive to creatre a virus.

2. Linux users are more computer savvy and much more likly to avoid or detect a virus.

Linux is not virus free, but if work with a normal user instead of a the root the virus can not do very much.

But i don't think Linux that Linux is danger because it it open source. Because it is op source, software bugs are found faster and there a fast patch.
