Clean the area with something that will take all the smells out of the carpet. Something there is yummy to the kitty, change that with a product called Bitter Apple. It can be sprayed almost anywhere and is safe for animals and kids.
If possible, cover the most munched areas with aluminium foil, cats don't like biting or walking on it.
Lastly, get toys, lots of toys. Treats too. Get one of the "fishing pole" type toys as well as anything you can find that moves by itself. Encourage her to get so tired that she forgets the yummy carpet. Get catnip, if she likes it, get lots. Plant it in little pots all over your house. She'll chew these instead of carpet.
Use a squirt bottle to discourage any more attention to the carpets. Good luck and remember: cats are stubborn so lots of patience and be consistent!

If you Try hot sauce on the place your cat it is chewing on it may make her stop because it would be not taste as pleasant another way is take the tobacco hot sauce and put it on there or use pepper that cat will find out soon that it shouldn't be chewing on any thing like that also u may want to get her some toys that she can chew on and play with like the cat nip toys.

There are spray products, as you've already been reading. But I question the hot pepper spray idea . The cat's first experience with this could cause suffering that shouldn't be necessary to solve the problem.
I wonder if your cat is de-clawed? I've notice that this kind of chewing thing seems to happen with de-clawed cats and can even be worse than the damage they do with claws.

I would buy a scratching post;a tall one not one of the small round ones. I would also buy some catnip which cats love. When you see the cat chewing your carpet tell the cat no. The cat will listen eventually. Cats are smart and they know the sound of your voice.

Try some eucalyptus essential oil available at your health food store. They usually don't like the taste or smell but it won't hurt them and it will make your house smell pretty. Just remember a little bit goes a LONG way! If that kind doesn't work you can experiment until you notice one your cat isn't fond of. Though they are kinda expensive so you might try lemongrass, then mint. If that isn't a route you want to try the pet store may sell some spray - apple bitter is what is called.

get a spray bottle of water. When you see the cat chewing on the carpet squirt the cat with the spray bottle. Cats HATE being wet and hate getting sprayed with water worse. eventually the cat will learn that he gets sprayed when he chews and he'll stop.

Cats are very smart, much smarter than you might think. I have several adult cats who have tried that same thing... Scratching on furniture and carpet. They do still try it every blue moon, but I found that negative reinforcement whenever you catch them, is the best way to go about training them.

What I do is a quick double clap, very loud, and very close to them. They scat. But overtime I have figured out how smart they are. When I do catch them trying to scratch something up, I will raise my hands to do the clap, and they will see it, and stop and run immediately. So I do know that they do know what they are doing is wrong. Won't stop them alltogether, unless you declaw them (very painful to a cat), but I have found these stubborn animals are 87% trainable by the negative reinforcement. You have to do it every time you see them.

I found that taking up the carpet was best solution. Make sure cats have plenty of things to occupy them~ scratching posts etc. Good luck
