They both bark a good deal, but the Belgians I know bark less than Collies. Belgians Sheepdogs have thinner coats, so you don't have to brush them as much. If I were getting one, I'd actually prefer a Belgian Tervuren. I like the color and the temperament better. Definitely smarter than collies. All can be nippy with kids.

I'd avoid the Belgian Malinois - they can be extremely aggressive. A lot of police departments are using them now because of their agility and willingness to bite really hard.
Whatever breed of puppy you decide on DON'T go to a pet shop or buy one off the internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are kept in deplorable conditions. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there. These "breeders" have figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.
Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money, but I'd rather get a pup.

People, who don't know what soap tastes like, have never owned a dog!
Oh, I know, pure-bred collies look gorgeous, don't they! They are the supermodels of the dog world. You only ever see the 'after' photos ... but seriously high-maintenance.
Only hairdressers really think they are no big deal to keep groomed. They use a vent-brush and a special dog or baby shampoo, and a special non-allergic dog conditioner, and believe me, while they find a brand of dog-shampoo that doesn't make their skin break out, it is not an easy month to catch and treat them to recovery. Be ready to call in reinforcements. Collies are also hysterical circlers and will wear circular tracks in your garden. It's that needle-nose narrow-brain focus.
I would go for a Belgian sheepdog myself. Have you not even tried asking a breeder or kennel what dog personality would fit your lifestyle?
I love all dogs, and would choose to home anyone's rejects instead of having them put to sleep. But the reason they are rejected is always a problem with the owner.
Why pick a dog that might be urgent and active and defensive when you might really want a small laid-back short-haired type who likes to be soothed and petted and sleep a lot?
Dogs are specifically bred not to change. They can't alter their personality traits, they don't have any heritage of mixed resources to call on. People have dedicated years to narrowing down their options to make very sure of that. You really do have to choose which behaviour you yourself can handle, to live with 24/7.

Belgian Sheepdogs require a lot of socialization because they're bred to be highly smart and they can develope strong relatioship. Collie is somehow similar to Belgian Sheepdog, they're also highly intelligent, but Collies are bred to be more of a "therapy-dog" which means, they're easy to train and control. If you have a lot of time on your hand and you want a very active dog, you should pick Belgian Sheepdog. But if you're too busy and just want a controllable dog, I suggest Collie. In my opinion, I'd go with Collie because Belgian Sheepdog is said to have a lot of behavior problems, including personal time with its owner.

Definitely a collie, why? Because I have to say my collie is so much more intelligent than any of the other dogs I have had. She was so easy to train and Very Loyal. someone said Collies weren't good with kids which isn't true at all, mine is very protective. But I do have to agree that the maintenance is somewhat annoying. Although I wouldn't say you have to brush them Every Day.

They both bark because they are herders but, the belgian may bark a little less. Don't get a herding dog if you don't want a barker. If you want a really good calm dog, try a greyhound or if you like big dogs, a mastiff. All dogs bark but some are just more prone to it. my Mastiff only barks when she needs to...........very rarely
