check out this recipe and come to your own conclusion,
brown sugar, vinegar,pineapple juice,ketchup,fine dice pineapple,
fine dice redpeppers (bell) thichen with corn starch,so you know where the red comes from,you can use tomato puree also.

red food coloring if you like it red. Most homemade or chef made sauce is orange. The res sauce u get aT A CHINESE PLACE is manufactured and the red color is just for effect.

The jar I have right now says it's colored with paprika. It looks more orange than red though. I think they just use food coloring to make it red.

Your sauce will be red if you use the red rice vinegar as one of your ingredients. If you want it even more red you can add food coloring.

I think its the marchiano cherry's, the ones they sell in the jar with all the liquid. I love it so much. Maybe you could use a few drops of red food color? Just a thought.
