This is the information I received from Genealogy classes last year. Next week are new Genealogy classes and I will be taking more classes. If I get updated info, I'll let you know. I have some handouts that you might be interested in, contact me. I also have the alphabet of the German language and several info sheets which has too much info to write here. If the links aren't working, I'll have the new links next week.
The website that didn't complete the whole line is after dnutting:
/germanaustralia/e/chron
The spartacus web site, the rest that isn't showing is, after uk:
/USAEgermany.htm (according to my sheet the USAE is caps)

See if there is a local genealogy library around. In Houston, Tx; the Clayton Library is the place to go. That is all they handle and there are various countries along with all 50 states in their holdings. Your local library may have some stuff or can usually do an inter-library loan for materials at other libraries. You may also try the library on a college or university campus as a source. Ancestry.com is probably the biggest online source (you have to pay to use it). Rootsweb is also another source online, usually free.

"Cyndi's List" has links to thousands of genealogy sites.
Use the German sites and directories if you can learn German.
FHL and ancestry.com have much info but tends to be unreliable so you have to verify all info yourself.

Also try Mormon sites - they're geneology freaks - not just for mormons.
Look up the meaning of your german surname - you'll find others with the same name so you can connect.
Ask elderly relatives about your family history - you'll get the best stories!

It depends on what you want to find...if you want to find a coat of arms try www.historyofnames.com...I'm pretty sure there's also a link there to other sites.
