How about Dough Handprints? I have them from when both of my boys were little. I found a website with the directions so I don't have to type them out:
http://www.kidsdomain.com/craft/handprnt.html
The other thing I have is a large sheet of construction paper with their handprints (both) at the top. The handprints were done by pouring finger paint into a pie pan and having child put his hands in the pan and then applying his hands to the paper (like fingerprints). The Tiny Handprint poem was glued below it. This is the poem:
Tiny Handprints
Tiny handprints grow so fast
Their awkward groping soon will clasp
A ball, a book, a sweetheart's hand
A diploma, briefcase, wedding band.
Tiny handprints grow so strong
It doesn't take them very long
To snap a shirt, to paint, to draw
To labor hard, to drive a car.
Tiny handprints grow to be
A person that is quite unique
A wonderful mix of so many things
With his own feelings, thoughts and dreams.
Tiny handprints grow to rely
On his parents to bring him up just right
His parents pray that when he's grown
He'll say their job has been well done.
Tiny handprints are ours to love
The sweetest gift from God above
A miracle that never is surpassed
How sad they grow up way to fast.
Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my finger prints
On furniture and walls.
But everyday I'm growing up
And soon I'll be so tall
That all those little handprints
Will be hard to recall.
So here's a special handprint
Just so that you can say
This is how my fingers looked
When I placed them here today.

Have them do a card with the top ten reasons they have the best dad. I'm sure that the kids will come out with some great ideas on why their father is so special. By the way, don't forget about those kids that don't have a dad. Make it more for the special man in their life.

Homemade ties are a horrible idea, please don't do that.
Usually hand-made cards are the way to go.. Kids will enjoy making them more and fathers will love it.
If you are looking for something more upscale get them to write a Haiku (or any type of Poem) about why their father is the best. Make it with cool borders etc and they will love it.
Don't waste money on any other crafts, cards and words are more precious. My dad still has the ones we wrote as kids and says those are the best father's day presents he has ever gotten.

I am the proud owner of a simple wooden heart, with an inscription on it. Since time is short, the flower/water idea could work to make the heart and the inscription could be colored crayon or penciled on to a card and re-vamped to read "for Dad".
mine says: Grandpa's
Are For Loving
And
Fixing Things

You can always buy a bunch of those shirts from Target and other retailers that say "Dad's the best" or whatever, and come with T-shirt paint to make hand-prints on them.

Make t-shirts that say "Best Dad Hands Down 2006" Have them take their hands and put them in fabric pant and put their hand print on the shirt. On my kids shirts I got some iron on transfer sheets from walmart and printed their picture on it and ironed it onto the shirt and printed their name (in the font of your choice) out on the sheet and also ironed it on.
