By definition they can't, since "choosing" to be mentally ill would in and of itself be an indication of mental incapacity (it's not a functional or rational decision). Therefore, the road to mental illness, no matter how long or where it starts, is not one that's chosen by people.

That's quite a question. Actually, I do think some people do choose to be mentally ill. Or, in reality, they fake a mental illness to escape life, even to get to be in an institution for treatment of mental illness. But that is very unusual. Most of us who are mentally ill would not choose to be for anything in the world. It can be the worst agony that you can imagine. I hope you don't think what you said is true, because you are far from the mark. No one would choose the life that the mentally ill lead.

Mental illness is not a choice, that would be like choosing to have cancer. But thats not to say that some people fake a mental illness, I believe that in those cases it is a need for attention.

Choose?!? EXCUSE ME?!?! We don't choose to become mentally ill. I never chose to suffer from depression or an anxiety disorder during all the bouts I've had off and on since I was 13. I would choose to never have to suffer from it again but I know there's a chance for a recurrence in the future. I just don't know when it'll happen. Now people who suffer from metal illness can choose to receive treatment for it like I did with my last bout and will do in the future.

People do not choose to become mentally ill. It is an illness. My brother suffered with it for many years. The medicine ruined his physical health.

I didn't know that mental illness was a choice. Kind of like asking why do people choose to get cancer or pneumonia? It's called mental illness because it is an illness, not a choice.

I can't imagine anyone choosing to be mentally ill. Mental illness isn't chosen it just happens sometimes when something goes wrong.

Ever seen One Flew Over the Coocoo's Nest? In that movie, the man has nothing good in his life, no job, no house, no food, and so he fakes insanity so that he can be taken into a mental institution to live a better life. I think that this is mostly a hollywood idea, but for the same reasons some people stay in jails on our tax dollars living for free.

People don't choose to become mentally ill any more than they choose to get cancer or diabetes.
