If you get chamomile tea and make one strong cup and mix it with 3 or so cups of cool water and soak your hair in it for about 15 minutes, it naturally lightens your hair. You may have to do this more than once. For a bit stronger, add only a few drops of lemon juice.

Actually you are correct. Using sun in may not damage your hair but then if you want it done, professionally than you must tell them that you used sun-in because most chemicals react very adversely to sun in and your hair will could break at the root or become very mushy and damaged and hard to manage!
As a professional hairdresser I would never use SUN IN! You would also be better off going to a salon where you will know it is done correctly. otherwise I would try using lemon juice if you cannot possibly afford the salon. There are so many products out on the market and so many variations to mixing highlights and color and I wouldn't want you to turn your hair green or puke orange. Good luck though. Just remember I have a saying for those who did do their own color and it turned out awful---"Quit Your bitching if you did it in the kitchen" Also remember that certain colors and certain perms don't mix if you ever decide to get a perm.

Lemon juice works well but if you are brunette ANYTHING that can lighten your hair may turn it more ORANGE than blonde or lighter brown. My suggestion is to take a small skinny section of your hair from the back of your head and towards the top of your neck. Tie all of your hair up in a ponytail except for that little section (like as skinny as half of a pencil) and wet it completely with lemon juice and lay outside in the sun and let the sun do its work (won't work without the sun). check that small piece after a few hours of tanning and see if it has lightened up. If the color is coming out a shade that you like then do many small even sections of your hair to get highlights. You can also make some chamomile tea and add it to the lemon juice once it has cooled to get even "lighter" results. Chamomile tea also helps to prevent and smooth split ends. I wouldn't recommend doing all of your
hair with this method even if your test strand comes out great because whenever you dye your whole head of hair one color it can be very dramatic and shocking. You might think (but my hair is all one color right now) most people don't realize that they have a few shades of color in their hair. Please make sure to do a test strand first because you don't want to regret a hair dye mistake. Badly colored hair take a while to grow out and it can be difficult and costly to fix color problems. Also, the lemon juice I am referring to can be found in the produce section in a little yellow, plastic shaped lemon in the produce section. If you can't find that one they also sell it in a green glass bottle (i think the brand is named REAL LEMON JUICE. If you go to the grocery store ask someone in the produce section where they are or ask anyone where you can find bottled lemon juice. Remember to keep the juice in the fridge when you are not using it. Have a great summer :)

Wash you hair in a blond highlight shampoo--for blonds. That may lighten it a bit or maybe a cream. I have used that Suave -Strawberry Shampoo and it lightened my hair.

You can't do it without using some sort of chemical. Save your pennies and get it done right from a salon. You don't want to ruin your hair.

so you don't want it dyed and you don't want to go into the sun...you're kind of S.O.L on that one. You can get subtle things done professionally that won't hurt your hair.
