I have a Samsung DLP widescreen tv with no HDMI input, but a DVI...so if I use an optical audio cable for sound from a next gen dvd player to my yamaha reciever, can I get a HDMI to DVI cable and get the same video results as I would have with a regular HDMI cable?

yes, but dvi connection only gives you picture & not sound. hdmi will provide both & some upconverting dvd players have either dvi or hdmi to give your current dvd's the best picture possible.

The next generation DVD players won't have DVI outputs; they don't even have that now. If anything, they will have an HDMI output tho. HDMI is similar to DVI; it has the same format of digital video signal, but also includes audio. You can get an adapter to go from HDMI to DVI, but there will be no audio.

I need more information. You have a dvi connect on what, a tv? The latest hook up for a dvd is a hdmi connect, which allows for a digital picture and digital sound. They are manufacturing HD dvd players as well which allow for true high def dvd watching.

DVI refers to the electrical connection between DVD players and projectors, TV , etc. This is the latest type of connection used by todays high def equipment.

You should not have any problems unless they come out with newer interface... one of much higher caliber..

the answer is yes you will get virtually the same results for your picture quality using an adaptive cable but there is always some loss when more connections & modifications are added.

Sometimes it pays off being poor & waiting for the dust to settle & standards determined before making the jump into a high price new product while bugs are being found & prices very high.
