The word "hell" is used in the King James Version, the Catholic Douay Version, and most older translations to translate the Hebrew word Sheohl and the Greek word Haides. It means "to conceal, covered over, or concealed place." So the original word did not carry the thought of heat or torment.
Today people think of hell as that portrayed in Dante's Divine Comedy, although the idea of a fiery hell dates back long before.
Hell basically means "death." Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10 says: "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. FOOTNOTE: Ecclesiastes 9:10 Hebrew Sheol
People would have to have knowledge, that is, be conscious of being in hell, if it were to be a punishment. So being in hell means being asleep in death, in a state of unconsciousness. Therefore, a day or a thousand years in hell would be the same: a person is not aware at all.
Like the verse said: The dead (those in Sheol) know nothing.

Well, I would wake up bright and early to walk my fire-breathing dragon. Then maybe I'd spend a nice, relaxing day fishing in the Lake of Fire (using fire-belly newts as bait, of course). Then I'd go home, feed the phoenix and basilisk, walk the dragon again, and flop down in front of the TV to watch the Church of Satan broadcast. That Anton LaVey is SMOKIN'! Probably cook up something on the barbecue grill for supper...well, the whole backyard would be a grill, but everyone would be invited!...walk the dragon again, and hit the sack.

I can imagine it would look like going to Yahoo Answers, not even realizing that you're in hell yet, and when you get there, looking for an intelligent conversation, all you find is people writing their own arguments between each other that have nothing to do with anything interesting. It goes like this:
Question 1: "Don't you think so-and-so is a stupid-head?"
Question 2: "Hey dude, just wanted to let you know I reported you, hypocrite"

It would be absent of all love. You would be totally seperated from God, which you could never even begin to understand what it would be like to be seperated from all love, since it has never happened. Since Hell is also a physical place, you would be tourtured and left for your soul to be in complete agony! Sounds like fun huh!
