People have overlooked two simple but deleterious factors: 1,3,7 trimethylxanthine and allergy. Simply put: caffeine allergy. It is medical knowledge that the longer a person is exposed to a drug, the higher the chances are for developing a tolerance, and an allergy to the substance. Once this happens, caffeine allergic persons can't properly metabolize caffeine, which is rapidly absorbed by all organs, and distributed into intracellular compartments, and extracellular water.

Brain levels increase proportionately with dosage (5). In allergic persons, each cup of coffee, cola, tea, every piece of chocolate, and any ingested caffeine products, intensifies toxic psychosis. Half-life increases. Subsequent doses, including minute amounts, act as a bolus. Cells are poisoned, including neurons.

When you’re suffering from an allergic reaction to caffeine, one or more of the following things can happen: “loss of focus, intellectual deterioration, delusions, loss of judgement, and other symptoms of poisoning.” Because many people don’t properly recognize the caffeine allergy, they continue to ingest it (and why wouldn’t they?), and that can damage the brain and make things worse.

I was not allergic to caffeine, but I had a heart condition known to the cardiology world as AV node re-entrant tachycardia....big words for my heart beat really fast.
If I had a caffeinated beverage, it made it really bad, so I stayed on a totally caffeine free diet for about 10 years until I had an ablation last October.
I knew immediately if I had gotten caffeinated tea or something with caffeine in it. It about drove me crazy.
I wasn't allergic to it, but I had problems with caffeinated food (chocolate ) or drink.

Sorry folks..but as a board-certified Allergist....I'll have to chime in...insofar as the proper, scientific definition of the term "Allergy" is to be properly utilized....there is absolutely ZERO evidence that an allergy-antibody (IgE) mediated allergic reaction can possibly occur with a molecule such as caffeine!! IMPOSSIBLE!!! having so stated, and as is true with many such chemicals, drinks, foodstuffs, etc...there are a good FIVE other categories of various states of "intolerance" -- a far better and more accurate word. BOTTOM LINE--though there are LOTS of folks intolerant of caffeine and its stimulant effect(s)....there are NO people who can possibly be truly "allergic" to it!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I am intolerant of caffeine. Just one cup of tea makes my heart act up. I feel weak, have a rapid pulse and I am short of breath. I cannot climb even one flight of stairs without resting. Too much caffiene can also make me very sleepy, so that I just cannot stay awake.
