A very good thing is that it grounds a society with some moral value system - this a central theme of most religions.
Unfortunately that very grounding when taken too literally can drive extreme behavior and rather than create an inclusive cohesive world, it's differences can create rifts in our willingness to accept each other for who we are rather than what we believe.

One of several good things is, religion gives you a "group" to be a part of. In America, at least, you'll be shunned rather quickly if people find out you're not religious.

The most important bad thing about religion is that it's divisive, and judgemental. You are forced to agree with certain irrational prejudices, that make no sense. But you can't be a member of the club if you don't discriminate against the outsiders.

Personally I don't believe in God and I don't need a God. I have everything that I need and I am very happy. Religions are belief systems originated to control and subjugate the less informed masses through fear. Fear of persecution, damnation, purgatory, death and a whole swath of frighteners to keep the people in line. I think that religions are false and a lie and have caused much suffering and death through the ages. God is just a fairy tale to give the lie a persona and to explain the unexplainable. I'm a Christian. First off, Christianity is not a religion. Religion is man trying to reach God, or a god. Christianity is God reaching down to man through the sacrifice he made by sending His son to die for us so we could be forgiven and go to Heaven. That being said, Christianity is a relationship with God. The good things are that you have comfort, eternal life after you die, love, courage and strength to face your fears, many many more things. Bad things are that some people won't believe and you can tell them and tell them but the won't listen. It hurts you because they've turned down the reason you're alive. But then you just get more fired up to tell more people so its all good.

A good thing about religion is it gives you a firm foundation on which to build. The bad thing about religion is that many people get "stuck in the foundation" and don't let their spiritual house grow to protect them from the coming storms. As for God, I find only good. It's peoples' misconceptions of God that is bad.

A good thing about God is He fills the empty spots all wanderers have. They all feel like they have something missing, and no matter how many wordly things they involve themselves in, nothing can fill up that space in your heart other than Jesus' love, peace, and direction.
A bad thing is the road to follow Jesus is hard, and it takes much self determination and great faith, as well as a growing strength in the Lord.
But with God nothing is impossible.

God is a great thing; religion is a patriarchial society's ploy for control and power, personally, I don't think God is in the religion business.
Of course I could be way wrong *laughing* but if God is all seeing and all knowing one could assume he/she knows better....

The good thing about God is that He loves you, and wants to save you. There is nothing bad about God. He is perfect. It is bad when people reject Jesus as their savior.

Morals and ethics come from all religions. Unfortunately the fundamentalists and extremists insist that they know the ONLY right path. It only works when each of us truly respects "others."
Morals/ethics are good.
Fundamentalists/Extremists cause heartache for much of humanity.
