Unfortunately, if you want your cake to be light and tender, rather than flat and dense, you should not put it in the refrigerator. Cakes like room temperature ingredients which is why you should set your eggs, milk and butter to room temperture before mixing allthe ingredients togeather.
Putting your cake batter into the refrigerator after the effort of bringing everything to room temperature, will only produce a not so delicious cake. feel confident that if you were to leave it at room temperature with plastic wrap lightly touching the surface, you would be safe and better off. But warning, do not let it sit overnight. 2-3 hours tops.

well, I make muffin batter and refrigerate it to use for as long as a week so maybe it's the same with cake.

If the batter contains eggs, you probably wouldn't want to keep it in the fridge for more than 24 hours or so. If you're going to keep it longer than that, you should probably freeze it in a sealed container, or in a zip lock bag.
Also, if you do keep it in the fridge, put a layer of plastic wrap on the surface of the batter. Otherwise, it can form a "skin" because of the egg and dairy products in it.

A day (a day and a half at most). If refrigerated, the batter shouldn't undergo any change of texture in the final product. Great question! You make me want to experiment with freezing a couple different types of batter. Hmmm... Thanks!

The batter is fine as long as it's refrigerated.. I'm not sure why you would choose to put it outside..

The longer the cake sits before cooking, the less the leavening will work. I would say bake immediately if you can, but if not you can expect a denser, flatter cake.
