If you are fishing from the bank of a lake and using a regular rod and real not a fly rod then maybe I can help. I've been fishing the same lake for about 10 years. There are many good baits out there but the two that work best for me are salmon eggs and power bait. You can get them at any walmart k mart etc. Usually spring and late fall are the best times for trout where I live. But in the summer go as early as you can or close to sun set. Use a 6-10 pound test line I prefer a gold size 10 eagle claw hook and pinch on a small lead weight about a foot above the hook that way the weight stays on the bottom and your bait will float about 10 inches above, or you can use a slider weight. All this stuff is very inexpensive. Less then 10 bucks. It's best to get a map of the lake bottom so you know where the deep holes are and where cover is. But if you can't just try different places. Just cast as far out as you can tighten up your line a little and wait. One little trick I use is to throw some little rocks or pebbles as far as I can where I am going to fish. But only do this once in a while. The noise will sometimes attract fish. When you get tired of waiting for the fish to hit your bait re-cast every 10 minutes or so in a little different place. If you get bored with bait fishing try a mepps spinner they work really well sometimes. The colder the water the better it seems.

Rainbow trout:

Rainbow Trout is an excellent species of fish to pursue. They exist in all sorts of lakes and man-made reservoirs. Rainbow trout will bite more on fresh bait then old stagnant bait. There are many different types of bait used to catch trout, however the best I have used is definitely Berkely Power Bait and fresh nightcrawlers.

My favorite power bait color is rainbow and green. Also, if you have the money, buy Power Bait Select because it contains sparkles which further attract the fish. To rig Power Bait use no more than six pound test. follow these instructions:

Rainbow trout instructions:

1. slip on a sliding sinker onto the line ( 1/4 oz- 1/2 oz)
2. slip on a red bead
3. tie on a very small swivel and securely tie it onto the end of the line.
4. tie on a piece of line to the swivel ( the length of line will determine how high off of the floor the bait will rise I like anywhere from half a foot to three feet.
5. Next tie on a good treble hook use anywhere from size 18 to 14.
6. Now grab just enough Power Bait to cover the hook but that will still float in the water. you can mold the bait to different shapes!
7. Now rub a small amount of scent on the bait and carefully cast your bait to a good spot.

The rainbow trout

Over the years I have fished I know a couple of secrets that I am willing to share.

Rainbow trout secrets:

1. scent is Necessary unless you are using live bait. I like using smelly jelly in night crawler formula. Many people have reported success using kick-n-trout, however i have not had a chance to get my hands on some.

2. When using nightcrawlers make sure to use a worm blower or a syringe to inflate the worm and allow it to float in the water. Also, use a small single size 10 hook for night crawlers and cut night crawlers in half.

3. Experiment!! When the fishing is slow try using different techniques, one of my favorites is to sloooowleey reel in the power bait and stop. Retrieve no more than one handle turn per five seconds, then stop reeling to allow the bait to float above the floor. This allows the bait to cover more area and the moving bait attracts the trout around the area.

Have fun and take no more then you'll eat.

Best Trout Baits

The best trout bait is either a really small mepps aglia spinner or woolly bugger flies. If you are fishing a small trout stream i would go with a size 10 woolly bugger, but if you are fishing a lake i would use a mepps or a acme kastmaster. I would fish in the morning and afternoon, where the fish will be the most active. As for water temperature, it doesn't matter as much, but try to fish colder water if you can. Good Luck!

They feed mainly on insects on top of the water, but they sometimes snack on insects in the nymph stage drifting below the surface of streams and rivers. They also eat plankton, fish eggs, smaller fish, and even crustaceans. The trout that feed on insects grow more slowly than those that feed on fish. The trout that eat insects often expend more energy catching the but than they get out of it. The trout that feeds on bait fish gets a lot more energy than it uses catching it. Cold mountain streams that are less fertile and therefore produce less food. The trout of these streams rarely exceed 1 pound. The larger rivers with marginal temperatures produce plenty of bait fish and the trout often grow to be about 15 pounds. The rainbow trout has a maximum age of 11 years. I put"bait for rainbow trout in the yahoo search box
and this is one small paragraph from everything you need to know about this fish listed under rainbow facts you will also find many pricing websites as well .

If you are going to fly fish, the best fly to use is a wolly worm.

If your using bait go with Berkley's Power Bait it comes in a little Jar and it's Labled 'Berkley Power Bait, Trout Bait'. Take a tiny chunk and roll it into a ball but it on a size ten single hook and put your bobber stop at about three feet.

Wordens Rooster Tail inline spinners work well too!

Rainbows love fresh white meat, catch some bait fish, cut the head and tail off, put some of the meat on a small hook and hang on, yellow sweet whole kernnel corn works good to.

fish eggs, corn, they make something called "stink bait' and various flys, depending on water condition, temp and season for the color of the fly.

Also not all bait is legal in all areas. I have always done best with the fish eggs and the corn personally.
