How do people tell if you have a no shoes house? Do your visitors ask, do it automatically or do you have to tell them upfront?

People know I have a shoes-off house because I always have my shoes sitting by the door. I'm always in my socks, so I think people get the hint. Often, I'll tell a first-time visitor before they arrive that they'll be expected to take off their shoes. That way, they can bring their own slippers if they don't wish to go in their stocking feet.

When people come over my house they usually see all the shoes piled up on the porch and take off theirs too. All of my regular friends know about the no shoes in the house rule and have their shoes off before I open the door. For first time visitors most will see the shoes and take them off on their own. I have only had a few people who have come in the door with shoes on and I just tell them at that point. "Oh, by the way I forgot to tell you have to take your shoes off on the porch, house rules"

Depending on where you live, it might be the norm. For example, where I lived in Canada, taking off shoes was expected. I'm guessing you don't live in a place like that, though.

Some people will realize if you have shoes by the door. That means you have to leave shoes by the door though.

Another way to do it is to put a small sign within sight when people come in the door that says something like "Please remove your shoes" and put a mat there that people can put their shoes on. Or you can just ask them to take their shoes off when you answer the door.

Usually having your own shoes lined up neatly by the front door sends the message. If you find people don't take the hint, you may consider posting a sign. But in any case, it's not rude to ask guests to de-shoe.

Personally, I always ask my host if I should remove my shoes.

Place a mat or rack by your door with all of your shoes on it. Then take your shoes off when go in the house. I always do what the host/hostess is doing, or take them off if there's a place to put them.

Look by the door and see if there are some there. If you see some, ask them if they wish for you to remove yours. Otherwise, I would say they are obligated to inform you if that is what they want.
In Hawaii everyone took their shoes off before entering. It was hysterical at parties trying to find your shoes when you left.

You would need to ask them politely up front if they can remove their shoes at the door. If they see shoes by the door, it may not be enough of a hint. Most people would be considerate and understand your policy.

Usually a visitor should ask on a rainy/snowy day. During normal weather though, it can be best to say "you can't put your shoes there" or somethin indirect.

God, I sound like "dear abby"...

I just ask people to remove their shoes. But I also have slippers at the ready. My Mom has crocheted me many pairs for others to wear, then I just clean them. I can't help it, I just can't stand to have all that they've stepped in tracked all over my house. I'm weird like that... :)
