A woman needs the seat down 100 percent of the time and a man needs it down 50 percent of the time . Average it out and the seat needs to be down for 75 percent of the time for a male /female couple.
The majority of the use is when it's down so leave it down unless you are urinating (especially if you have bad aim).

Putting it down BEFORE you flush is appropriate and more importantly it rids you from the germs that get into the air from your ....toilet. So it is a health issue as well as an etiquette issue. For real-- my husband saw this TV program and they put some chemical in the toilet and flushed it, with the lid up, and particles were spread all over the bathroom and onto the sink and the tooth brushes on the sink. So that really is nasty. What goes in the toilet should go down it and no where else. :)
I hope this helps you and your wife come to an agreement. Convenience is not always the best choice.

I grew up on a farm where the water pump was powered by electric (no city water). Therefore when the electric was out, we had no water. After a long snowstorm, we had been without water or electric for 4 days. Needless to say the toilet was rather rank. When Dad did his business before going to bed he made the mistake of leaving the seat up. Mom made a nightime stroll and assumed the seat was down. You can imagine the results! Don't take a chance! Leave the seat down!

Why is this even an argument!?
It has never ceased to amaze me how many infantile complaints women come up with:
---Who left the seat up?... How many times do we have to go through this?...blah...blah...blah...
[next day]
Who put the lid down?... No, I didn't say put the lid down, I said put the SEAT down?...blah...blah...blah
[next day]
Why didn't you put a new roll of toilet paper on the roller? Can't you see that the roll was almost gone? Yes, I know there's more under the sink,... but that's not the point!...blah...blah...blah
[next day]
Who put the toilet roll on backwards?...---
It never ends!.........
It's insane!
Is it any wonder that men have shorter life spans!
Don't get me wrong, a gentleman should be courteous enough to perform this simple act, but that's just it; IT'S A SIMPLE ACT! Nothing to get your panties in a wad about...
Ladies, make the world a happier place,... and LET IT GO!

Feng Shui says toilet seat down. You can help prevent a loss of opportunity by always closing the bathroom door and toilet lid (when not in use) to prevent the unnecessary escape of chi. Good Luck on your decision!

You guys should just put the whole toilet lid down/closed after the number ones and twos are done. This way, both man and woman is equal to lift something up and it's hygenic. What's the main toilet lid for then?

I have always put the seat down since I was toilet trained, more than sixty years ago. If this is something you two are aguing over, then I think that one of you has his head screwed on with left handed threads. Notice I said "his", not hers.

Toilet seats should be left down. Here's why: Men and women both need them down. Women need them down all the time and men sometimes. That means that the majority of their usage is in the 'down' position.

finally a legitimate question! the toilet seat should be left completely covered at all times. it's just a matter of hygeine. do you have ibs or something? why can't you wait the extra 1/99999999999999999999999 or a second it takes to lift it, then put it down when done?

It has to be down with the lid closed. This is very important if you have or plan to have children. A young child could drown in 2 in of water. So get started early and keep the can closed.
