You don't! They just do weird things. Put a towel under the bowl and use a heavy large bowl they can't move. Good luck

Aaw it really is so worthwhile. If I were you i'd set up a community she will play with the water. as an celebration, positioned some water in some large flower pots or maybe let her rump round in the bathtub with some tiny little bit of water. Then i'd merely prepare her to position off playing which includes her bowl. secret's merely too channel her power in a better proper way no longer to punish it for playing (a organic and critical instinct).

Mine does the same thing, and I've heard that it's because they can see the water and the reflection of light in the dish. Try changing the dish to something dark and non-reflective (lots of cat dishes are shiny and will reflect light through the water), and try moving the dish to a darker area where an overhead light in the room won't reflect off of the water. And yes, a heavier dish will also help from the cat being able to push it around.

Put the bowl on a shallow dish so it doesn't make such a mess. Mine do this too. It's too cute to be angry.
The only thing you can really do is stop him when he does it. Tell him NO! and stop the behavior. Repetition and Consistency! It may not work -- he is a cat after all, and will do as he pleases. =)
He'll grow out of it to some degree, eventually.

Your cat may like to drink from running water, so buy a kitty water fountain (at just about any pet store and many department stores) so the water will move without your cat needing to splash.

Get a heavy glass/porcelain type bowl that's hard to move. Also just get a rubber bathmat or placemat and put under bowl so water stays put. We had a cat that did that her entire life and so that's what we ended up doing and that worked.

I have one female cat that does this. She also stands with one paw in the bowl to drink. Just have to change the water more often. Same kitty also plays in toilet water unless you keep the lid down. She likes playing in water.

Sounds cute to me... but if you must put a stop to it, just don't put a bowl down, cats prefer to drink running water anyway, so I just let my kitchen faucet drip and they drink from that.

My male cat does that. I was told that sometimes they can't see the water, thus, they paw it to make sure it's there. Also, cats cannot see anything immediately under their noses. I learned that on the web yesterday.

All three of mine do the same thing. If I could figure out what causes them to do this I would be able to answer you better.
