I suggest you go with a vodka cooler to try. It is a lot cheaper and there are many varieties to choose from. My favourite is the Smirnoff ice - red label. It has a "lemonade" kind of taste but someone told me that if you drink too many, it really knocks you for a loop so be careful not to drink it too fast and remember that there is alcohol in it.

Don t listen to anyone that says it doesn t taste good in a soda. I had Smirnoff Green Apple and Coke, and thought it wouldn t taste good. I was wrong though; it did taste good. Smirnoff is pretty affordable and tastes great, especially as a mixer. Good vodka doesn t really have a taste like rum, whiskey or tequila. It really is much like water with a burn because that just about is what plain vodka is, water and alcohol.
Vodka is made with potatoes, corn, barley, wheat, rye, molasses, sugar, wine, or fruits. Whatever ingredient, it needs a high sugar or starch content and turned into a mash (heated water and ingredients). Potatoes will need an enzyme to break the starch into a sugar for the yeast to consume. Once the mash is ready, it s strained into the sanitized fermenting vessel and yeast is added. Once the yeast is done converting sugars into alcohol, the wash (fermented liquid) is siphoned out into a distiller and the sediment on the bottom is left in the fermenting vessel. After distilling, the first 5% of distillate recovered from the still are undrinkable because of methanol and other volatile chemicals. Toward the end, when the temperature reaches 212 degrees F (100 degrees C) and higher, the distillation process produces more volatile chemicals and should be discarded. A sample should be cooled to test the alcohol content and purity. Less than 40% alcohol content is weak and unacceptable; more than 50% maybe more concentrated than desired. If the distillate has unwanted flavors or aromas, there may need to be another distillation or carbon filtering. Re-distilling causes a higher alcohol content and purity. It is often common to distill more than 3 times to achieve quality vodka. Once the distillate is done with the distilling process, the distillate is poured through a brewing carbon filter, diluted to the desired alcohol percentage, and then bottled. Infusions can be done to flavor the vodka, and the vodka can be used to make extracts.

Vodka straight is definitely an acquired taste. It doesn't really have a taste to it which is why it's commonly put with orange juice or tomato juice or clamato juice. However, I have tasted Vodka's at Food & Beverage shows which were rather nice. Think of drinking really crisp and clean ice water but with a burn on the way down and you'll be getting close. Personally, $50 might be a bit much for a bottle of Vodka but it depends on what brand it is. My favourites are Smirnoff or Iceberg Vodka, which is the one that tasted like crisp & clean ice water.

Good vodka doesn't really taste like anything. In mixed drinks, it's the addition of other ingredients that make the drink special. Of course, there are flavored vodkas if you're interested in Lemon, etc. Good chilled or on the rocks.
If it tastes like rubbing alcohol, it's a cheap liquor that will make you wish you've never swallowed it.

Easy, go to a bar and order a $5 drink. If you don't like it, you're not wasting much money. Vodka is always best with a fruit juice, not a soda and not water or straight. Try a good vodka such as Grey Goose (you pay for what you get when it comes to vodka) with grapefruit juice or cranberry juice or orange juice.

Trust me!... It really does taste like rubbing alcohol. Everyone who said that is totally right! If you want to try hard alcohol, Vodka is probably not your best bet and it's definitly not worth fifty bucks! Unless your gonna mix it with something, then you may be able to handle it. Try buying some Vanilla Vodka and some Cranberry Juice. That tastes pretty good... I guess it's a "personal preference" question... Hey, there's a first time for everything! Good luck!

Cheap vodka can taste like rubbing alcohol. I would suggest Grey Goose. It's not even that expensive, and it's great. Very smooth.
