People get themselves in such a hurry. that they forget to be kind to others.
Some people see themselves as more important than others.
And then there are those whom are never taught to be kind to others, they are taught to always be on top & to run over all those deemed lesser that themselves.

Yes, we did have common courtesy once upon a time. Some still do, my children, for example (ages 23, 19 and 4) are all courteous because I TAUGHT THEM.
Parents want to be friends with their children instead of raising them properly.
PS - I am extremely good friends with my children even though I dared to demand proper behavior from them.

Somewhere along the way, most people have lost what they've learned as children for various reasons or some just never learned it to begin with. Some of us change what we've learnt because today it seems to be the norm to be'piggish'(no excuse-me's, no thank you's). Others decide to change their good manners because it is not reciprocated when they do it. eg. I work in a store and believe me I am this close to stop greeting the customers. You say "good morning" & people look around themselves as though you're talking to someone else, & they just don't respond. I keep wondering, why am I wasting my breath? Or you hold the door for someone coming in behind you & they act as if it were your duty. All in all, I was raised well & I will continue to do it despite misgivings.

Common courtesy is alive and well in the homes of those who still think it's important to teach it to their little ones as they grow up. Seemingly, many people don't bother with it much anymore, which is a shame.

Common courtesy went the way of consequences in terms of child rearing. And then we all met "entitlement". Once upon a time, yes indeed, we did have it. But non-parenting parents that strongarmed a society into foregoing consequences created an overwhelming sense of entitlement that created a generation or three of obvlivous, self-involved high-end morons.

It went out the window because most parents don't raise their kids properly anymore.Giving up your seat to the elderly, pregnant women or women in general never happens that much because selfishness is cool. Holding a door for someone, saying good morning or a pleasent hello was the code of conduct back then but today most people act like complete savages.

Of course. I was brought up to be polite and courteous. If you are English, you usually are, and you can add chivalry for men. My Father & Mother always treated each other with love & respect. My Father holds the door & stands when she enters a room or leaves a table. So does my husband. It's the way we were raised. We treat everyone courteously. Staff, children, friends. Good manners are always returned. try it!

We did, but fast food, emails, phone machines, and cell phones have helped cut common courtesy. I believe it's still present in some mature people, but it's beginning to fade. We have it, it's just not practiced by everybody...in the US.

Working in schools, I see a lot of the problems come from parents thinking their child does no wrong. Parents want to go jump on the teacher before they care to consider what the child may have done. To many parents, the child is right and the adult is wrong. When I tell kids that we would have never dreamed of acting this way when I was growing up....they inform me of what year it is and that I need to get up on times. When I tell them they are a reflection of their parents...they just think that is funny. Just to think, these kids are the world's future.

I think we have all become caught up in our own self, and we are all too selfish to show common courtesy. It's very unfortunate.
