There are many AV proggies on the market. There are many free and very good ones too!
Question time:

1 - do you want to pay?
2 - if so then how much?
3 - want a freebie?

Answer time:

To get a free 30-day trial try here: http://www.sophos.com

SOPHOS is INDUSTRY STANDARD KIT, used by banks, city councils etc. (Recommended).

Avoid Norton (Symantec) it works ok but clogs PC up big time.

To get a totally free & upgradeable AV proggy, go to:
http://www.grisoft.com

You can also try some sites like
http://www.download.com for freebie / trialware stuff

Best Wishes dude!

almost no one can give you a definite answer with so many to choose from, all with certain strengths and weaknesses

i would not recommend norton:
takes up way too much system RAM
interface is actually a webpage
long and often times ineffective scans
many false positives
hassle to remove
costs a lot

i would not recommend mcaffee:
much of the same as norton plus it has problems with a lot of applications

i would definitely recommend Nod32:
fast scans
best update utility (and proven)
least amount of false positives
continuously scanning but only using about 20,000 kb of RAM
small footprint
cheaper
