Quality over Quantity. The point is to work your muscles, not just do x number of crunches. For instance, my brother could do crunches all day, and it would do nothing for him. Now he does crunches with weights, to make sure he gets a good workout. You can always find information on this topic in fitness magazines, without having to pay a personal trainer. I personally subscribe to Shape, but there's plenty of choices.

If you just do crunches, you are strengthing the muscle under the layer of fat (assuming you're doing it to lose weight). I'd worry about losing the weight first. Cardio 30-45 minutes 3-5 days a week and do something like Tae Bo instead of crunches. You'll get the same effect on your tummy with the extra benefit of defined arms and legs :-)

You only need to train your abs 2 times a week to build muscle. But for me i train them 5-6 times a week. I do 5 exercises 3 sets each and 15 reps per set. I do knees to nose crunch, wide legged sit up, reverse floor crunch, vertical leg pulse and floor bicycle, try looking for them on youtube, if you cant find them then just do the plan that i mentioned with any other ab exercise. 5 exercises 3 sets each 15 reps per set.

If you have a lot of fat around your belly try some serious cardio first. Tip: While doing it contract your abs as much as you can, because it works like abs. When you lost the desired amount of belly fat start with abs. I recommend the stability ball, it is great. Also try to work all ab muscles and different moves. Start by 3 sets of 12, and as soon as you can do them comfortably add 8 more reps to each set, and so on until you can do 100 per day in 2 sets of 50 (divided in different groups for different muscles of course) Good luck!

The amount varies. IF you do your crunches all the way up, you should do 50 or so, not to be tough on yourself. If you do crunches just to get your neck up, 200 should do. If you do crunches to the neck up try doing some sideways.

I do these turbo jam work outs and i have stronger ab muscles. You shouldn't just do crunches though because you will eventually get bord.
