I live in the illinois suburbs, in a nice town. Our subdivision mainly is nice and quiet but at times we have people speeding down our street... we are the only street that cuts through 2 subdivisions and we have a park across the street so there are a lot of kids playing and people out and about... and many times at night and during the day people speed and there have been a few minor accidents... so i am trying to write a letter and get my street to sign it but i dont know who to adress it to and how to start it off.... i want to get a speed bump or to close the street off...ideas?

for a petition, think of something you would sign yourself, if someone presented it to you. i would try calling local police to set up one of those digital things that tell you how fast you are going or request an officer drive by. after you contact the city council with your petition, and nothing happens, call a local newspaper or t.v. station. good luck with this! keeping kids safe is #1!

It is usually the City/County public works or roads department that is in charge of stop signs, speed bumps, etc. You need to DOCUMENT the accidents and request a study of the traffic pattern. Once you can PROVE the problem, the City will usually do something about it. We fought this for several years in our neighborhood before we got a stop sign on our corner.

Contact your local city/county/state government, The mayor, or whomever is on the city/county council. If all else fails find out what voting district and contact your state representative. Most of these numbers are in the front of your phone book.

I don't know how it works in the States, I'm in Canada. It should probably be sent to City Hall or your neighbourhood councilman or what ever they''re called.
