All we do is lock them up & then let them back out. I think we should concentrate on trying to rehabilitate these people so they won't re-offend.
Some basic suggestions of mine are more psychatric treatment & self-help asststance, so criminals such as theifs & burglars can learn how to live without stealing. And mental help for those who commit acts of violence or abuse. And better rehabiliation for drug addicts.

I agree with some comments - there are people who are going to commit crimes no matter what.
And yes, they should be put to work (I know they work already) but they shoud be cleaning the environment & stuff.
But I do believe rehabilitation would help in some cases & would help to establish them as productive members of society.

I think criminals should be put back in chain gangs. There's to much litter and nonsense all over the place, and they should be the ones to clean it up. Or they should be forced to work in soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Let them know how bad things in the world really are, hopefully that would change their perspective. They definately don't desreve a free ride so take away their tv and movie nights, no dessert, no clean clothes, amd they should have to work for their meals. Maybe that would save tax payers money.

I've been told that 50% of the people in prison are there for crimes committed under the influence of drugs or alcohol which is definitely treatable ( I know that for a fact ). So, sure, rehabilitation would make more sense. But I think people just are too selfish these days to care about the less fortunate, so likely things will probably only get worse for less affluent segments of our society.

My suggestion is longer sentences with harsher treatment. Jail these days is only a little worse than being sent to time out. Criminals should be punished, instead of being coddled. If theft was punished by cutting off someones hand, there would be very little theft. If rapists and child molesters were lashed in a public place with all the paparazzi present a man would think twice about committing that kind of crime. Everyone in the world knows about our judicial system, and the whole world is laughing at how the criminals are treated with kid gloves, instead of being treated like the predators they are.

I don't know about rehabilitation, but they should be put to work. Rehab costs money and honestly we already pay for these people to live for free when they get thrown in prison. In Oklahoma actually they just tried to pass a law (I'm not sure if it passed or not), to make prisoners pay their own way through prison. If they couldn't afford the $35/day, they had to work it off. They should all be working. I have always thought, however, that we could USE them in the way that they used us. People who get caught vandalizing with graffiti. We all know they're good, but why the hell do they have to write their names on train cars? How about we pick these people up and force them to paint gigantic murals in large cities. A mural without politics or religion or something that can be argued over. Just something magnifying the greatness of the city or America. It's free labor. They could also go out there and paint murals over the previously vandalized areas. If someone ever paints over THAT, theres always someone to touch it up. I don't see how this is a bad idea. And hackers. We pick up these guys who send viruses to millions of people within days and what do we do? Tell them to stay away from computers. Howabout we sit them down and force them to hack into our enemies computers. They have a talent. Good or bad, it's a talent. Use them like they used us.

first, once someone has broken the law, and is sent to prison, it is soully up to that person to find, and figure out what they need and have to do for themselves to rehabilitate. I was in prison for 91/2 yrs- I had plenty of time to think about what i had done to myself. I didn't play the prison games, I stayed to myself, and I went to every group, selfhelp class and eventually went to college in prison. I had to re-learn my thinking and realize that NOONE but me , got ME into prison. I was taught things from childhood that I carried into my adulthood. STINKIN THINKIN. I had no selfesteem or even knew where I was going to be in ten years. I rehabilitated myself with the tools that incarceration gave me, It was MY choice to change. Most of the people I met in prison blames someone else for being in prison- When they need to look to themselves, they made the choices that got them there. The prison systems do have good programs, however mostwant the easy way out, for some one to fix them, instead of them fixing themselves. I worked hard and it has paid off for me, I completed my parole sucessfully, I have a good job( I did work at some horrible places, but I kept looking for better) I own my own home, have a nice car, good credit and I just got married to a good man- This is how rehabititation works for me- my life is 110% better than when it was prior to getting into trouble. None of this was easy for me either, i struggled, but I'm NOT going back to the life I had 12 years ago.

it was tried and failed completely in the 80's. inmates in for drug crimes used to laught at us trying to teach them to be an electrician or a carpenter, or a sewing machine mechanic.
They said yea like they were going to work for 15 dollars when they were making easy money selling drugs or selling stolen items.

We got "mafia" people in who drove to the prison in large cars with women in furs, and we were going to teach them to be a gardener ?

In general what happens is they get out of prison, where many are still running or in the same gangs they were on the street, gangs are bigger and stronger in prison than on the street.
That is where many get alot of thier new members.

many inmates can't even be let out of thier cells ever, not even to eat and what are we going to train them to do, clean a toliet.

Basicly the only people who beleive that an inmate in a prison can be trained a job or rehabilitated has never been in a prison in the real cell blocks.

It's not that they are not rehabilitated. What the problem is: society continues to punish them after they serve their time by denying them decent jobs, decent housing and that is what causes the "revolving door syndrome" If we can get society to change their views and take a chance then that is when things will get better.

Sorry, but you really are a bleeding heart. No, they should not be spending more $$ on programs for criminals. They should be using them to do hard labor.... (like maybe pick crops) instead of giving them 3 hots and a cot with cable TV, etc.

oh get a grip. they did something, and they need to do their time. yes some of them do need some counseling. i'll give you that. but some people will go back to committing crimes no matter how much "rehabilitation" they receive.

Every one can be rehabilitated. The reason we have crime to begin is the iniquity in class,as soon as we even the playing field and put everyone on an even footing we'll end a lot of crime.
