White chocolate is not chocolate. In order to be chocolate you have to have cocoa solids in it which there are none. If there were, it would be dark. White chocolate is cocoa butter and cream which is solidified. It's just because it has the same consistency as chocolate and that's why it is called that.

White chocolate isn't actually chocolate. It's a confection. It's just called chocolate because of it's texture.

White chocolate's base is cocoa butter, which is the oil/fat of the cacao bean (removed from the bean for processing cocoa powder). It isn't a cheap knock-off, though; its flavor from the cacao bean is more delicate than chocolate or cocoa powder.
