My uncle was a Army WW II Veteran (Invasion of Luzon, Philippines) who lost a 1st Cousin-Army KIA by a sniper in Cebu, Philippines. He told me that he felt bad that Eisenhower didn't stop the execution it wasn't necessary.

He was an American GI who was executed for desertion during WWII. He was the first American executed for desertion since the Civil War.
