Trust me, going to the salon looks a lot better. The dyes in a box would work, but the highlights don't look as good, and if you mess up... there's no going back. I've used one from a box before and I didnt like it, I let it grow out and then later when to a salon, and loved it. It may be more expensive, but it's totally worth it. Then you can tell them what you want, the color, how thick you want the stripes, basically everything. Then you'll be happy with the turn out. :]

I'm not an expert or anything, but I'm pretty sure that highlighting uses the same bleaches and dyes as other colouring does, the difference comes from where the bleach is actually put. With highlighting you take small bunches of hair, put them on a strip of foil, paint them with the bleach, then close the foil round them so the stuff doesn't come off onto the rest of the hair. I have to point out though, this is all based on getting to know about it while spending three hours having it done on me, it's quite possible I've missed out something horribly important =)

Get it done at a salon. Trust me! The dye
you buy will be harsher on your hair, and you'll probably mess it up and have to get it fixed at a salon anyways. If you don't have much money you can check out a beauty school, they will be pretty cheap and have more experience then you do.
If you HAVE to do it at home I recommend a highlighting cap (Sally's Beauty Supply). It hurts and takes forever (salons use foil) but the lines will be better. And yes you can use any dye...the highlighter one's will likely have the necessary utensils though. Good Luck!

yes you CAN do it.. but it is much easier to have someone do it for you.. like a friend you TRUST. make sure they take their time.. and don't spill it anywhere else around your head. you can use tinfoil strips to fold the hair up inside and sit on your head while you wait for the dye to work.. however i would reccomend getting it done for the first time at a stylist so you can see how they do it.. and then after that you can mimic it with friends.. if you are careful

I would go to a salon, at least for the first time. if you want to keep your hair that way for a long time, and it starts getting expensive, that's when you buy dye from drugstores and do it yourself.

It's easier to use a highlight die because it has all the tools you need. Trust me I highlighted my hair before.

I am a colorist, and a major part of my work is "fixing" at-home colors and highlights. Go to a salon.

If you've never done it before i sugest you find a friend that can help you. Also a cap would prolly be the easiest way for you to do it on your own. You can buy these kits at beauty supply stores (ie. Sallys) that can really help you.
