They actually took a Hound Dog and artificially inseminated it with a Polish Sausage. Yea, I know....... I thought it was weird too, what people will do to get a new breed of dog.
Below is correct; German- "dachs" meaning badger and "hund" meaning dog. So, Dachshund=Badgerdog. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and fight the badger. An interesting tidbit; similar dogs were in Egyptian art work more than 1000 years ago.
Oh! I better clarify, the first paragraph........ I am joking. ;-p
marquise_hari gives good information only she errors with the word evolve, most Breeds as this one are man made from cross breeding. but, we could argue that until the end of time.

It was formed about 300 years ago in Germany and their name actually means "badger-dog" beacue that is what they were bred for. I think they were crosses from hounds and terriers. You see, dogs can evolve very quickly into a completely different breed or look (two dog enthousiats and scientists bred together a pure-bred boxer to a pure corgi to get a boxer with a naturally docked tail. They got it in seven generations).
