These cartridges were always installed on Alert B-52s in engines 2 and 8 and occasionally on all eight engines. With the flip of switch in the cockpit, bingo, engine start.

The have a boeing part # but were more than likely manufactured by a sub contractor. It would not be out of the relm for them to have been made by someone like federal cartrage or another ammunition manufacturer. They were esently blank shotgun rounds whose purpose was to bring the internal perssure of the compressor section up to a point that would support combustion to turn the exhaust fan blades.

I pull SAC alert on KC-135A and B-52'sG models and I remember the cartridges coming in an coffee can with an turn key to open the can. It had a quarter size clip that you turn to remove and you bent 4 clips up for contact with the beech cap. Later on we got cartridge with an rubber coating (black). You rotated an clip to remove and an pin pop up. I remember an name like Talley or tandem. Had a lot of cart starts, will not forget an 8 engine cart start. What a nightmare that was.

sounds like something out of 'flight of the phoenix'....jet engines don't need shotgun shells to turn over...
