Polihale is great. Ask your hotel staff about Donkey beach. A short walk from the highway. you may see someone there, and they will probably be naked. lots of coves to explore. If you put in the work you will be rewarded.

We went about 6 years ago and the beaches were awesome. Really good snorkeling. I'm from San Diego, and have snorkeled a lot locally, but the variety of fish in Kauai was fantastic.
One book you absolutely need is the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. (I got it at the library). Great ideas on where to go for fun. Blue Room is an underground cave filled with fresh water (and ice cold) and supposedly bottomless. Super neat to swim around in the various caves within, but still small enough to not get lost. Even a bunch of locals didn't know where it was, or so they claim. Also, if you're going for sure there are a ton of B&B's. Seems everyone with a guest room has a B&B. Liz Hey has a great listing for all the good properties.
I hope you have a blast. One thing about Kauai that is different than Waikiki, is they roll up the street about 10 or 11pm. Waikiki is a constant party. You need to decide what is the funnest for you.

Most of the Hawaiian Islands have uncrowded beaches (except Waikiki where all the tourists go). I lived there for 17 years and visited all the islands and rarely saw any beaches that were crowded and even some that had no or very few people. They have so much shoreline that there is plenty of beach for everyone.

Yes. Travel West, counter clockwise around the island to Polihale. On a normal day, you might find one person per mile of beach.

yup, for sure. I'd have to say that of all the islands Kaua'i has the best chances of you getting an awesome beach all to yourself. The shoreline is the best of ALL the islands (and I've lived here all my life).

It did the last time I was there, but that was in the early 90's. Really nice place to visit.
