Insurance companies and hotels and condos and apartment buildings are now profiling dog breeds as "dangerous" without ever seeing the individual dog. In my opinion, it is exactly like racial profiling in people - of course, it's not quite as hurtful as denying a person a job. They do it because it is easier to judge a whole breed (or race of people) than to find out about the individual's worth as a companion.
"Profiling" has its place - I mean, that's WHY we have purebred dogs. If you want a dog to herd sheep, you don't get a Toy Spaniel. And if you want a quiet dog that's great with small kids, you probably won't want a Sheltie. But when profiling is used to exclude a breed from all consideration as a pet, that's inexcusable. And how are they going to decide what mutts to ban?
Contact your local legislators and get them to pass the laws you WANT - before it's too late!!!!

Sure it is. Just the same actually. You may have a wonderful family/kid loving Pitt Bull but the apartment complex and home owners don't KNOW that for sure. You heard abut the woman that was attacked by a dog in her apartment building that fit the profile. The new papers were all over that story, you never hear about the hero Pitt Bull! Compare a large Poodle to a Rottweiler, which one do you think of when you think of a big voracious dog, of course not the poodle. But you've made a good point. And did you know here in the Puget Sound Seattle area they are now charging "Pet Rent" for each animal you own. $10-$25 a month per animal on top of YOUR own rent! I was shocked when I heard that. And then there are the $400 deposits, only half being returnable if the owners/manager decides you CAN have it back. Most of the time they take the whole thing. And yes, they have now begun to discriminate between different dog breeds, some are OK, some not allowed. Not really fair but in the numbers taken over all, the "bad" breeds are raised with that in mind! So the folks we need to look at aren't the landlords of the rental properties, it is the owners of all these horrific terrifing and down right mean dogs that we need to get straightened out. A little attitude adjustment of their own if you know what I mean!

Are you asking for an ethical opinion or for a legal answer?
Breed profiling is legal in most areas - in fact, many insurance companies will raise your homeowners/rental premiums if you own a certain breed of dog (due to the increased liability).
Dogs don't have the same rights as humans. Sorry.

Breed banning is one of my soapbox issues. It is just like racial profiling for dogs. I understand why some rental properties wouldn't like certain dogs for insurance and cleaning purposes, but for just breeds, it is total bull! People make dogs bad, they aren't born bad. I should stop now, before I get too crazy. But breed banning is BAD BAD BAD!!!!!
