A real friend does not follow you when you are on dates. Most of the time, Ex's can't be friends. Which relationship would you like to workout the most? Then get rid of the one you can do with out.
In this case, You can't have your cake and eat it too. Good Luck! :)

At the risk of stating the obvious, go and have a serious heart to heart talk with your ex. Explain how you feel, and how disruptive his intrusions are to building on the relationship with your new boyfriend. If he is truly as awesome and as good a friend as you say, he'll listen, and more importantly, he'll understand and give you the space you need.

He's jealous, and has problems letting go. You got to be firm with him, and let him know that you have your own life without him now, and, if he does not stop showing up when you and your guy are out, you will have a restraining order placed on him.
Also think of how your boyfriend is effected by this. He needs to know that he is not in competition with your past, and that he is totally at the center of your affections.

Yeah, you need to say something. I know you say he's totally awesome, but I'm a little worried about this situation. If you ask him to stop and he gives you any trouble at all, you need to get someone to help you. He shouldn't be following you. Make sure he knows it's over and you want him to cut this out.

There comes a point when friendship turns to STALKING. Really, I am a guy, so I will tell you, GUYS CAN BE CREEPY!!!If he can't understand that there are times to just NOT be around, then, well, he's not much of a friend. And the guys you date shouldn't play into his reutine. He's obviously a chump and can't move on. I just hope he doesn't have a key to your house....Put an end to it NOW....Be safe...

Well, there are 2 ways to handle this issue. If you and this person has dated for awhile, tell him with alittle sympathy, maybe he does not know how to start where you stop. He is alone and with out you. Or if that does not work well take legal action.

Have a serious talk with him, explain that you don't appreciate him following you around and that you have a boyfriend now. Hopefully he will respect your decision. Good Luck!!!
