Malignant is cancer. Non-malignant is not. Non-malignant tumors may be harmless and may not grow, but they also may be harmful and may grow. Sorry!
You'd have to reserach the exact pathology and diagnosis to learn more.

Malignant brain tumors are brain cancer, and can be fatal. They keep growing until they cause a fatal brain malfunction. Non-malignant brain tumors are not growing, and only need to be monitored. A person can live a normal life with a non-malignant brain tumor.

Malignant means it is cancerous which means the cells within the tumor rapidly divide which then causes the mass to quickly grow which causes pain and other problems.
A non-malignant tumor is one that will not grow. Another name for that kind of tumor is benign.

a malignant brain tumor is a cancerous growth. a non-malignant brain tumor is not cancer. However it has to be treated for it is a space occupying growth and may get larger compressing the brain inside the skull. Since the skull cannot enlarge easily, the brain tissue is compressed and that can of itself lead to serious problems including death.

One is cancerous the other is not and the only to distinguish the two is by a pathologist looking at a sample of the tumor (biopsy). Cancerous ones have the potential to spread. The problem with brain is that since skull is a limited space, symptoms can be very similar (headache, nausea, vomiting, neurological deficits) and even benign tumors which continue to grow and create symptoms need to be removed.

Malignant is cancerous, non-malignant is not. They can both be dangerous, especially in the brain region, but one is cancer, while the other is not.

when my son was diagnosed with an oligo in his temporal lobe, I asked that question and was told that with tumors in the brain, it all depends on the location and how quickly they grow. A really cool website is thebrainmatters.org.
