There is no reason why you shouldn't call him or writing him. You don't have to instantly say you still crave him in every way, but just let him know you were wondering how things have been going for him, etc. I have old boyfriends that I still talk to or have recently started talking to again. It's like recommunicating with an old friend. Obviously you have things you can still talk about. Just give him a call or write him a letter saying you were just wondering how life has been treating him. He may tell you that he's now happily married, has met a truly amazing woman that he's currently dating, or he might say he's still looking for the woman of his dreams. Then you can go from there. He might even say he's been thinking of you this whole time.

My major question for you on this, is why haven't you asked him if he is in a relationship when you have talked to him? I think once you have established this important information you will know if and when to proceed with trying to get something going again. And my advise as for the risk- I believe that love comes too few and rare and every possibility should be taken. You will never know if this person will bring you happiness without at least giving it a try.

How can you say you are going to communicate this time when you can't even ask him a simple question? "short of asking"...well, what is the matter with that? Feel like you lose face or something? Why are people afraid to say they actually care about something? Let's all pretend we don't care and be blaise and be alone.

There is a chance you might be hit by a bus. You can only control what you can control. If he has a relationship, that is out of your control. if not then you have the control to make the difference.
The chance of something now working out is in existance regardless of the percentages.

Ever watched that movie Serendipity!
If it's meant to be I'll come back around!
If you're serious you must do everything possible until you get the answer If he's interested too, or not!
If not - then take that answer and move on!
Life is long, but very short!

Gosh. I don't know what to say.
I think, however, you should step out. Call him and somehow discretely wedge into the conversation to ask if he is in a relationship or married.
Then, either way, you can have this off your mind.
