It's all about timing and observation to me.
Knowing when to take time with customers and cocktails.
Watching for customers needs and keeping their drinks full. Patience and lack of stress. People are only there to have a drink not heart surgery. Start with complicated cocktails first then well drinks then wine and of course beer is always served the freshest.
Memorize the basic drinks and the local names for the popular cocktails.
Be ready to suggest a favorite cocktail to suggest. Know your basic liqours, ie the differenc between single malt scotch and blended scotch, etc.
Don't Worry be happy!

Ricardo has some good advice - do not drink at work.!
Get yourself a little address book - paper. In it write down all the recipes of the popular drinks and carry it with you. ALWAYS have a cork srew; 3 pens; 2 safety pins; a lighter; a cigar cutter and band aids in your own personal little bag you bring for every shift. Know at least 5 bar tricks. You can find them all over the internet. REMEMBER the jokes people tell you. I bartended for 15 years in Toronto and it was fun. ALWAYS be on the floor 15 minutes before your shift. ESPECIALLY if there is a shift change. The day person wants to get out and you need the knowledge that he/she can impart from the day. What draft needs changing soon, specials etc. Good luck. Bartending made me a lot of money and a lot of friends.

as a rookie bartender i can only say that i recommend you spend time at a bar that you know hopefully with a bartender that you know if you dont know them get to know them and ask them questions watch them make drinks and when they make something you dont see mto know have thme tell ou whats in it. and try to spend this time at the bar in the early after noon when it not so busy and the bartender has the time to talk to you .. and when your bartending and dont know how to make drinks just ask the cumstomer that way you will learn. another good piece of advice is while bartendiinng make as much small talk as you can it will give the customer the feeling that you are focused o them and it will be appriciated. besides it doesnt hurt to have a bartender you like and t o have regulars..$$$$$$

practice practice, fall down, practice..
Also, make sure you listen to what others want, unless your a bartender for an assembly line kind of bar, you might need to increase your personality skills

When I started tending bar and I didn't know what was in a drink, I'd be honest, smile and say, I'm sorry darlin, what's in that one? Big smile and a low cut blouse will help people (men) forgive you for not knowing!
