The Illuminati was originally formed in 1056 by a Muslim leader by the name of Hassis Hassan. It is from his name that we get the words "hashish" and "assassin".
They were reorganized in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of Canon Law at the Catholic Ingelstodt University. The later group was primarily a power struggle within the Freemasons.
Anyone attempting to prove either group's continued existence typically has no real documentation to back up their claims. (The name Fritz Springmeier comes to mind as being one person who claims much but documents little.)
