Please, please, please discuss this with your doctor! If he/she won't give you a straight answer find one who will. Are you tapering off your Xanax because your doctor told you to? It is very important that you never change the dosage of prescription medication, especially one like Xanax, without your doctor's approval.

6 years ago I was very sick. I had had a good old-fashioned nervous breakdown. Unfortunately I had a very bad psychiatrist. I had been on Xanax for almost 6 months when he told me how addictive it was and that I should cut back. I was still very sick and too intimidated by him to ask questions. So, I proceeded to cut back at the same rate that I had increased the dosage in the beginning. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!! I went into withdrawal. It was awful. I had to be hospitalized again. I went to a different hospital with a psychiatric ER. I was there for 9 days. When I was released I found a new psychiatrist with the help of my niece who is a therapist. I also found a new counselor.

Believe me when I say you don't want to cut back on your Xanax too fast! It will have a disastrous effect on your mental health!

not long. The half-life (The time required for half the quantity of a drug or other substance deposited in a living organism to be metabolized or eliminated by normal biological processes.) of xanax is very low.

no matter what dose you are on, or how addicted you are to it, the withdrawl is more of a psychological effect. Trying to sleep without xanax is hard. Ask your dr to prescribe Vistaril. If you have ever tried Benedryl to sleep, it will cause restless leg syndrome. Vistaril is the same type of med as Benedryl but doesn't cause the ugly side effects of the OTC med.

I back up what JC says-wean yourself off of it...take some every day for about 3 weeks, but reduce the amount every 3 days until you are down to a minute amount...how much are you taking, by the way?

Good question because I was wondering the same thing myself! I have been feeling edgy the past few days as I have tried to ween myself off of it. I would recommend slowly going off of it. I don't know about you, but i dislike the stuff. Makes me groggy. Takes me out of the game. I don't like the effects. Again, i would recommend gradually getting off of it. Best of luck!

It depends on the individual, also it depends on how long it takes for the withdrawal symptoms to be relieved: sweating, vomiting, muscle cramps, tremors. Best of luck...

just keep taking them. If they help, keep taking them. If you want to stop taking them, reduce the dosage until you are not taking much dosage and then stop completely.

I don't know. I just wanted to say congratulations and good luck, if you're quitting.
