exorcism and demon possesion is a real thing

Catholics did not "come up with exorcism. Exorcism is the internal possion of demons. This talked about many times in the bible where Jesus cast out demons. Which was written WAY before Catholics became a religion.

Well, I think the question is more how. You see, there were exorcisms, per se, done in the New Testament. But they were not done often. What happened in the history of the Catholic church was that they were shrouded in mysticism, where they believed in some "magical formula" to get rid of demons; they also ascribed any malfeasance or wrongdoing to demons. This would cause the priests to be called in constantly. As for why exactly, well, there has always been a fascination for the supernatural; it is in their case that I would say perhaps too unhealthy.

That's an interesting way of putting it. If you are ever in need of an exorcism, just remember that a Catholic priest is the only one in the world who can do it for you. He was handed that power down through generations which began with Christ Himself. I have priest friends who have done exorcisms, seen farmers throwing their tractors across fields, women being slammed by an invisible force against the wall of the church when the words of exorcism were spoken over an infant in the Rite of Baptism, seen books thrown across a room by themselves.

Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Catholics have been casting out demons ever since Jesus and the Apostles did it.

Modern psychology says that most of the people who had demons cast out of them were probably miraculously cured from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. But their cures were still miracles.

The Catholic Church believes that real demonic possessions are rare but possible, so they keep a few exorcists around just in case.

With love in Christ.

They didn't. Casting out demons goes back...way back. Not only did Jesus do it, the apocryphal Book of Tobit suggests the expulsion of demons had been a part of Jewish thinking centuries earlier.

They have such a hard time casting out devils. When in the bible the Apostles and their followers did it in the name of JESUS. Catholics keep trying to cast them out over and over again in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Theres no power in those titles. Its in the Name!
Luke 9:49-50 (King James Version)
49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
