Yes spitting should be outlawed. It's so gross! Guys are always spitting and I think it's so nasty.

I think sports people spit because they are out of breath and working up a sweat, you must have been there, after 3 miles you feel like you want to chunder but a good flob will keep you going for another mile or so.
Then there are people who do those long stringy stretchy things that dangle from there mouths for no other reason than to be cool. Yes this should carry a punishment.
I have also noticed a habit of certain people with certain prejudices to spit on the floor where you are going to walk when they see you coming. This is a big no no and is not widely recognised.

Public spitting is outlawed in most places. As with many laws, it is not enforced. Perhaps because the jails are already full with felons.
Nevertheless, as offensive as spitting may be, it is quite a bit less disgusting than an old habit from days gone by, before the advent of tissues. As a child I remember the "snot blowers" who were mostly old men in the western US. They would bend forward, place an index finger on one nostril and blow the reams of repugnant snot from their infected sinuses. Then repeat the process on the other nostril.
So, perhaps things are relative to our place in time. I think most of today spitter are smokeless tobacco users indulging their addiction and baseball players. Of the latter, what an example they set. Anytime the camera is set upon them all you see if the flight of saliva about every 10 seconds.
Perhaps, like the old snot blowers, we should bring back another device of their era; the spitoon. It can be left at intervals in public places near gabage cans for example and bars to compensate for the smoke free environment in most cities, while people still indulge their need for nicotine.
Loogies in lieu of smoke, what an idea!

Sometimes people have no choice but to*, so it shouldn't be outlawed provided they aim for a drain at the side of the road rather than the actual pavement it's self.
There are FAR, FAR worse things people do in the streets, like not clean up after their Dog or Horse after it's crapped in the street, for instance.
* e.g. if they get a greenie work it's way in there...... or perhaps when it's bucketing with rain outside, and you kinda end up sucking in the rain water pouring down your face out of reflex (that stuff tastes 'orrible) + doing certain activities can cause a bit of a build up of it, and it's better (and SAFER) to spit it out than swallow it and have it go down the wrong way..... that hurts like hell (worse still if you've been sucking on a mint).

So let me get this straight, you go out for an hour for a run and after 10 minutes you decide to spit to get rid of some saliva that accumulated in your mouth and you should be fined for it?
Give me a break.

It's so vile. I was just walking to the grocery store and this older woman got in front of me at an intersection. I was admiring what a pretty dress she had on and next thing I know...she spits! Suddenly that dress was not so pretty.

Unfortunatley I spit to. However I don't just spit to spit. I also don't just spit anywhere and not in front of people. I agree, It's not hygenic and is bad manners. But I don't think it should be outlawed. But people should be informed that spitting should be done in moderation.

They shouldn't be doing it at people. Sometimes people do need to spit though. If they had common courtsey they would try not to let everyone see or do it at anyone. Also people are working in food services shouldn't be spitting. If they need to it would mean they are sick and shouldn't be at work.

I agree, apparently it is helping to cause a rise in TB, a disease that was supposed to be eradicated....!
I don't go along with the 'athletes have to spit' excuse either; i've been a competitive runner for years and have never spit in public. You should be hanging on you your hydration...!

so sorry girl, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do... and if you don't like it, sorry. Just as you can't ask an overweight man to keep his crack in his dropping drawers, or a rather smelly person on the subway to go back home and shower; you can't stop a gal/guy from hawking a loogy when a loogy needs to be hawked... I understand that it seems it shouldn't be shot in your direction, but sometimes spit needs to be spat.
