OH I'LL TELL YOU>>>
I've deviced my own mechanism... i love it.
a) I've a caller id, and i generally don't pick up the unknown numbers... - but i guess everybody does it... but my style is mainly (b) - below
b) OK - when i receive a call, and i don't recognize the number, i lift the phone, and I DON'T UTTER A WORD. I'm MUM
I think since most calls are initiated by automatic system or computer, it does not actually connect anywhere unless you say a word like "HELLO", "HI", etc.
The voice activation turns the conversation with the telemarketer on.... and i don't let them.
Even if it is not a computer, i just pick up the phone and listen for few seconds... unless i hear a word from other side, i don't speak... it probably irritates the system and/or the person on the other side.
I love doing it.
My friends tell me that its being Rude... but i think they deserve it... they asked for it... by disturbing me in the evenings...

As far as I'm, concerned, telemarketers have the most stressful job possible. Be polite but don't let them finish their spiel.

Apart from being registered with the Telephone preference service in the UK that makes it an offence to call me ... if they don't take the first hint I hand them to my four year old to talk to them - apparently they aren't able to clear the line until we hang up (for a while anyway) ... and it keeps the 4 year old amused.

I am on the national do not call registry, so I get VERY few calls.
When I do, as soon as I realize who they are, I say, "No, thank you," and hang up.
I used to work for Dial America, years ago, and believe me, it is the kindest thing that you can do. Doesn't waste your time, or theirs.
In the USA, to enter your phone number(s) in the registry, see this site:

I always say "Hold on" and hand the phone to my 5-year-old grandson or my 17-year-old neice who is really really good at disguising her voice and asking some really funny things...she actually had a 15 minute conversation once with a man who thought she was a girl name Kaaesha and was looking for her baby's daddy...it was funny!

Put the phone down and let them go through their routine. Then, when it's quiet, you ask them if they enjoy their job and if they feel that they are getting paid enough. That will get them to stop calling, as they will be out looking for another job!
