If the government imposed a steep fine, not a crime, I would quit smoking. It's better than paying these outrageous cigarette taxes in New York City. A pack in some stores sell for about $7.00. Just make it illegal and folks will have to quit smoking. Why haven't they tried this yet?

I honestly would not want to pick up the slack of the loss of revenue obtained through cigarrette taxes. If the government lost that income then everyone would have to pay more taxes. Why don't you just try and quit yourself.
Oh, don't worry about the tobacco industry. They have their dirty fingers in all kinds of other businesses. I don't think they'll lose money over the loss of cigarette revenue.

They are making it illegal without actually making it so. If enough ppl quit because of inconvenience and penalties. The cigarettes won't sell, and over time, the stores will carry fewer and fewer brands. Then eventually none at all. They are being phased out. You can't smoke anywhere anymore. Some states have stopped it in all public restaurants, sporting events, the bus stop, the parks and playgrounds, certain sections of the sidewalks, they even want to stop smoking in your car because it interferes with driving. The only place you can smoke anymore is in your home or apartment, as long as it hasn't been designated smoke free. Some group predicted that within the next three decades, there won't be enough smokers to support the tobacco companies, and will fold.

Last time I looked this is a free country, smokers pay more taxes in this country than most people. If you believe that making it illegal will make people feel they have to quit, why is there such a huge drug problem in this country, that's illegal and keeps growing. Don't give Bloomberg any more ideas, in the boroughs your'e already paying the fine $7.00 a pack cigarettes thats fine enough, been there done that. Just drive out to the Island and save a couple bucks.

Why not just pass a law making all bad habits illegal and all good habits mandatory.

A video camera in everyone's bathroom and a fine to anyone who forgets to floss! In fact, an even bigger fine for anyone who fails to wash their hands before leaving the restroom!

We can outlaw alcohol! It didn't work the first time, but people are more willing to give up their rights now a days. I'm sure it will work this time!

We can outlaw junk food! The food has to meet a certain nutritional standard or it's yanked off the shelf. Any one caught buying twinkies on the street corner is charged with a misdemeanor!

can you imagine the over population in the prison system would be if this happened. I only pay 12.00 a carton, so I am not worried about the money. Plus this is my entertainment. I don't drink, I don't go out and so I sit here and smoke.

I really don't know why they haven't. It's disgusting, no offense to you, and it's an expensive waste of money. Never mind the life-threatening side effects. Some people would complain though and say something about taking away rights.

why oh why would they want to make it illegal, think about all the tax money that comes off each and every pack!My thought would be to tax the hell out of booze instead, I never saw someone killed by a crazed smoker.

No... there are certain things governments should butt out of, and this is one of them..... if smokers want to give themselves lung cancer or whatever, that's their f***ing problem.

If they ban smoking, using scientific evidence that's a little flaky in some areas.. what they gonna try taxing / banning next? Masturbating? (wouldn't put it past them trying).
