It's a Douglas Adams story. The Grebulons were sent off on an incredibly long journey for an incredibly important mission. Unfortunately, when they got there (or rather, when they got somewhere), they had all accidentally lost their mission instructions, their job titles, their names, and their minds. All they had left was a nagging sense of missing purpose and identity, which led them ultimately to blow up an entire planet.

I dunno, it just sounds too familiar. But I'm just a cynical atheist...

For all it's worth, I see your point, although religion's more like that annoying kid in the class who still believes in the tooth fairy despite all evidence to the contrary because she just has to exist. Religion has existed for a long time, primarily to explain the world around us and still clings on despite huge technological and scientific advances. I think religious people might be Grebulons and others are the cheeky ones who stole the others mission instructions so that they could keep the fire going muahahahahaha :)
