It depends on what is causing it, with me the right combination of supplements cured it. With th knowledge I gained I have helped many people overcome this problem.

I recently discovered Equalactin. It is supposed to work either way: with diarrhea or constipation. It helps and is OTK. Medication (prescription) is needed for some. It can be hard to find something that works and medication that once worked can stop working. Currently I take medication only when needed. The condition varies greatly among people meaning different things will trigger different people. For me it is stress, lack of sleep and sometimes food. Help your partner realize what seems to set their IBS off. (My BF was far more aware of what precipitated my problems than I was sometimes.)
Be understanding first and foremost. It can really suck sometimes, especially when it seems to never get better. :(
Also be aware that IBS may not be the only thing wrong. I have had my gall bladder out and also have Colitis or Crohn's disease (my dr and I think it is more likely Colitis but it can be hard to definately prove when you are not having a flare up at the time of the tests!)

What seemed to help my IBS was an occasional cup of hot water with 5-7 drops of peppermint oil. There are also peppermint preparations to be found in health food stores. A liquid aloe solution also seemed to help as did eating oranges and staying away from salads.

I suffered from IBS for several years. I finally "cured" it by going to a chiropractor! It's amazing what chiropractic can do for someone. It has also helped with my migraines!
How does it work, you may ask....all of your nerves are connected to the spine. When you have a subluxation, (this causes pinched nerves) your body can have problems. You body's "system" doesn't work correctly and there can be a wide range of symptoms, depending on where the subluxation occurs. The intestines are generally connected to the lumbar area of the spine. Regular adjustments to this area may relieve symptoms and may even "cure" your IBS, as it did mine.

Be sure your IBS is not actually Celiac Disease. Research studies have estimated that 10% to 60% of IBS cases are actually Celiac Disease (CD).
CD is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. It is caused by an allergic reaction to the proteins in wheat, rye and barley called glutens/gliadins. The only treatment is total avoidance of all glutens/gliadins in the diet. Patients who follow this diet usually respond dramatically.
Sadly, there is a very good chance your doctors are not very knowledgeable about CD. You may have to do some 'homework' to educate yourself and then 'push' them to do the same. CD occurs in about 1 person in one hundred. Unfortunately in the U.S. doctors are so 'unaware' that they only diagnose it in about one in 3500 (3% of cases!).

I have IBS also and I use an anti-cholinergic to stop the stomach spams and I take 3 metamucil fiber caplets every night to form bulk and stop the diarrhea. Also peppermint tea works wonders! Stay away from dairy products and greasy, fried foods. Check out this website, it will help you

Medically there is nothing they can do. As a friend or family member just try to be understanding. I have IBS as do many people, to help I sometimes take Immodium, to try to make life a little more livable, so that I don't miss out on everything.

Reassure him/her that God help those who help themselves... there should be a change in diet, more towards fibre intake. Some antispasmodics might give relief from colic and bloating. Emphasize on the positive aspects of life and good prognosis of the illness.

A person with IBS should not have caffeine or fruit in the morning and they should not mix things like fruit and proteins.

if you are "runny" you should eat two fist-size pieces of french bread. If you are "constipated," you should try eating 6 prunes, an apple, or 5 leaves of lettuce. You should figure out what kind of foods make you "runny" (foods high in fiber & water) and which ones make you "constipated" (red meat and dry foods with high salt content, such as bread)...I hope this helps.
